The event was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!! SUPER BOWL XXXVIII: A HOUSTON SALUTE was the first-ever opening ceremony for a Super Bowl, and it featured appearances by former President George Bush, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, the coaches from both the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers (the first time opposing coaches had EVER met BEFORE any Super Bowl game in history), and to top it off... 38 of Houston's greatest sports legends!! This terrific event opened Super Bowl Week, and was initiated, personally organized, coordinated, and hosted by CBS Super Bowl anchor Jim Nantz on Monday, January 26 at Reliant Arena. The crowd rose to its feet to pay homage to the decades of accomplishments by the amazing superstars who call Houston home or had a huge impact on Houston sports. They included an AMAZING group of athletes and coaches (along with one team owner): Houston Astros Nolan Ryan, Larry Dierker, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Jose Cruz, and then newly-signed pitchers Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte Houston Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon, Rudy Tomjanovich, Clyde Drexler, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, and Calvin Murphy Houston Oilers Earl Campbell, Warren Moon, Elvin Bethea, Kenny Houston, Bruce Matthews, Mike Munchak, Dan Pastorini, and their best coach ever, Bum Phillips Houston Comets and Olympians Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes Olympians
