MEIJI ERA LACQUER WOODEN BOX WITH ANTIQUE CALLIGRAP HY TOOLS The photographs seem to capture the mood and flavor of this box and its contents. It appears that the song bird or sparrow has its eye on a "critter" placed or inlaid on a leaf...made from shell. The gold applied paint has real gold content. The inside of the lid has hand-painted Kanji (old Japanese writing pronounced kahn-gee); it contains the artist's signature, date and maker's mark. I was told that this is from the 1880's. Please note that the edge of the rim of the lid has a hand-carved scalloped or wave design, 3" long, along the middle or center, on both sides. The size is: 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" x 1 1/2". The calligraphy tools include four calligraphy brushes...one newer (still has price tag of 200 yen) and three much older, also with Kanji writing and labels...made of bamboo and real hair. It also includes the original Suzuri (su-zu-ree) read more
