This Meissen presentation of the Adam and Eve allegory, made somewhere beetween 1860 and 1924, has been spiced up with a few refugees from Noah's ark, or possibly from Edward Hicks' famous painting, the Peaceable Kingdom. In addition to the python-like serpent slithering down the apple tree, 10 animals cluster around the couple's feet -- a lovely white horse, dignified lion, a deer, puppy, several chickens and peacock in full splendor. The apple tree, arching overhead, is laden with fruit, upon which the wayward pair (modestly fig-leafed) are lunching. The piece has been professionally restored, with repairs to foliage, Eve's fingers, the deer's antlers, and a crack on the base. Underside bears Meissen's blue crossed-swords mark, with an incised line below (Robert Rontgen's Book of German marks shows this was used from 1860 to 1924, the incised line indicating it had slight flaws.
