Meissen" Blue Onion pattern. Large, oval serving plate. By Volkstedt-Rudolstadt, Thuringia, Germany. Between 1894 and 1896. See Historical Notes, below.
* Classic floral and fruity Blue Onion pattern, on white background. With scalloped edge. Extremely pretty. * Pattern color a very satifyingly deep, cobalt blue. * HISTORICAL NOTES 1. One of many pieces brought from Germany to the United States, by a couple married in Berlin in the 1920s . The bride was originally from Mainz, Germany, and some Meissen and other pieces in this pattern were part of her substantial trousseau. The couple relocated to New Orleans in the late 1930s. 2. Volkstedt-Rudolstadt, f ounded in 1894 by Richard Eckert. Produced mainly luxury porcelain. Their porcelain mark was registered on March 27,1894, (Fürstliches Amtsgericht Rudolstadt No.11). It was withdrawn in 1896 after a complaint by the Meissen factory. * BLUE UNDERGLAZE PORCELAIN MARK Includes company's own version of the crossed swords; a small, numerical-looking mark at one end beneath the impressed mark of two numbers, 149 and 4; a hazy, faint, indecipherable blue mark just inside outer base rim; and an impressed mark just inside outer base rim, at opposite end, two vertical, parallel lines. * MEASUREMENTS 13 1/2" x 9 1/4" x 1 3/4" deep. Weighs over 2 1/4 pounds (or 1.03 kg). * CONDITION In excellent, old condition. No chips, nicks, cracks or crazing. However, please note the following: Two hatch marks across swords, that apparently refer to a minor flaw, visible to camera on upper left rim at about 11 o'clock; looks at first like a tiny crack but I believe it to have occurred in manufacturing. (MORE CLOSE-UPS available on request.) See and watch for more listings for pieces in the Blue Onion pattern from this collection, especially my other three, similar oval plates, ranging from 9 1/2" to 15 1/4". Watch for more antique items from this and other collections, including more fine china, from Germany and England. Please refer to my feedback for reliability.
