This extraordinary M. Munk Vienna published postcard was designed and signed by Mela Kohler (1885-1960). She worked as a famous fashion illustrator who became a highly respected and popular artist in the esteemed Wiener Werkstatte (Vienna Workshop) that operated from 1903-1932. From the late 1900's to its closure, she participated with other famous progressive artists in the Workshop. During those years she designed more than 900 postcards featuring whimsical holiday themes and fashion illustrations. She also worked for the M.Munk publishing company located in Vienna. This Valentine Postcard, published by M. Munk in Vienna (c. 1930) is extraordinarily rare, with the majority of her holiday postcards designed for Christmas and Easter. This unused postcard is signed "Mela Kohler Wien" (Wien for Vienna) and "M. Munk 1263." (series number). The graphics present an awesome artfully dressed woman wearing high haute couture. A cherub holding a large red heart hangs onto the woman's ribbon styled belt which pulls him along behind her. The scene is bordered by a beautiful garland of yellow flowers and foliage. The back is unused except for a lightly marked stamp "a5" which may have indicated a price, a series or another unknown category. This postcard will make an important addition for a holiday postcard or Wiener Werkstatte collection, read more
