This William B. Melick Clinometer Grading Scale No. 3, patented Dec. 3rd, 1889, is in good working condition and came from a very old estate sale in eastern Kansas. The Clinometer has a brake, which works as intended, on the back (see second photo), as well as one on the front that doesn't engage the dial; it appears to me that a bearing or some such component behind the dial has permitted it to slip back a little. Even so, it does rotate and indicate angles as designed, and probably could be repaired quite easily by someone well-versed in such procedures. Scale is 1/2 inch to the foot. The Melick Clinometer was one of several gravity inclinometers that surfaced in the late 1800s, according to an Internet site I checked into. Unlike others, it has a rotating scale and fixed points. This one has its original box, see third photo. In about 45 years of dealing in antiques and collectibles, including many tools, this is the second Melick Clinometer I have seen; I sold the other about a week ago. The wood portion -- it appears to be cherry -- of the device is in excellent condition. The glass lens was broken, see first photo, when I obtained it and I did not take it apart to try to replace it. Shipping $9.50.
