"Memoirs of My Own Times, in Three Volumes," along with "Diagrams and Plans, Illustrative of the Principal Battles and Military Affairs, Treated of in Memoirs of my Own Times." Both by General James Wilkinson. Published by Abraham Small, Philadelphia, 1816 (First Editions). With 855, 578, 496pp, plus appendices. Atlas volumes contains 19 maps (some fold-outs). Vol. I has 3 facsimile fold-outs and 7 fold-out charts. Vol. III has 2 fold-out charts. EX-LIBRARY with the usual treatments. The three memoir volumes are uniformly rebound in sturdy red buckram with gilt lettering on the sides. Atlas bound in brown cloth with peeling leather on the sides. All hinges and textblocks are very strong. Pages are toned and foxed with age, and are subsequently brittle (occasional tearing and chipping). All title pages and maps have perforated library stamps. First two facsimile plates in Vol. I are complete, but torn/separated along creases. The scarce memoirs of one of the most notorious figures in American History. James Wilkinson was two-time Commanding General of the United States army, a veteran of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and the first Governor of the Louisiana Territory. He was also a spy for the Spanish Crown; a fact that was widely suspected in his own time, but not proven until years after his death. His life and military career were frequently wrapped in scandal. For example, his involvement in the famous Burr-Wilkinson conspiracy, in which he and Aaron Burr (the killer of Alexander Hamilton) planned to form their own nation. Wilkinson was court-martialed in 1811, but was found not guilty. These memoirs were intended to help clear his name and repair his soiled reputation (which turned out to have been entirely deserved).
