Founded by Aaron Dennison and E. Howard, the highly regarded Waltham Watch Company of Waltham, Mass. is one of the grandfathers of U.S. horology, in business from 1850 to 1959 making high quality pocket watches, clocks and wristwatches known the world over. The company adopted the American Waltham name in 1859, having already used such names as Warren, Tracy, Appleton and Boston.
Well folks, this is a very original men's vintage military Officers dial watch, a desirable British Market, Solid 9kt Rose Gold wire lug timepiece in excellent condition. This three-piece, hinged-back timepiece measures 37mm end to end and 31mm in width (34mm with crown). This watch was fully overhauled by my watchmaker David just last week and its original manual wind Waltham mechanism winds and setting smoothly while keeping accurate time. This timepiece is a great example of a British market American Waltham watch, made specifically for export OUTSIDE the USA, hence the "USA" printed below the Waltham name. Domestic watches by Waltham (or Elgin, Hamilton, etc.) didn't put USA on the dial, so this is a small but neat feature. It also features its original 9 Karat Solid Gold case made by the Aaron L. Dennison Co. of England , the same Dennison that helped establish the Waltham Watch Co. but later moved with his family to the United Kingdom to start a watch case factory. The original white porcelain enamel dial is in excellent condition and without ANY hairlines or chips, it really is pristine. This "Officers" style dial features a trademark Red 12 , black enameled Breguet numerals, a checkered 60 minute outer track border, original blue steel hands and a sunken sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and blue steel seconds hand. Signed WALTHAM USA below the red 12. The solid glass crystal is in mint condition, a new old stock addition. The case is in excellent shape, a three-piece example in 9 Karat Solid Gold that has a rose gold hue and solid wire lugs that accommodate a 16mm strap. T are absolutely no dings on this case, and just one small scratch near the crown. The vintage winding crown is original and in very good shape (some rub to the gold finish) and it operates smoothly. Turning the watch over, I see that the back lid is without any personal engravings or wear, in excellent order. Peeking inside I find a finely damasked (etched top plates) movement that is stamped Waltham, Seven Jewels - U.S.A. and it carries the serial number #27,429,786 - dating this mechanism to 1930 - 1931. The inside of the case lid is signed DENNISON, Made in England, 9, .375 - F - A.L.D., 488866 C . The "F" is the Birmingham date code for 1930 , when this case was made (as per ANCHOR hallmark) and it was likely cased and sold in 1931. This fully cleaned, oiled and regulated timepiece winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time . It is fitted on a new 16mm black alligator calf strap with "fold over" ends and gold (finished) buckle of high quality. All in all this is a true find for somebody who appreciates the beauty of an original, solid gold, military dial timepiece. It's a keeper! Always an extra nice watch at a no reserve price so have fun kids.
