This is a new, 100% cotton men's fundoshi Japanese loincloth. This type of fundoshi is called 'ecchu', a style that's particularly comfortable and easy to wear. It's elegantly simple, a rectangular strip of cloth with sewn in ties that you wrap around your waist and tie with a simple knot. The cloth is pulled under your legs from the back and then up behind and over the tie, letting the cloth fold over it. These are made by our local artist friends Mr. Nonoyama and Miss Tsuji. That's a photo of them outside promoting their work. Until I was introduced to these, I had only imagined the very long lengths of fabric without the added ties that are sometimes worn by men in festivals, the fabric wound round and round, often with someone's help, with the look of a thong in back. The mawashi loincloths worn by sumo wrestlers of course also often come to mind. When I saw these though, I was intrigued by how practical and comfortable they looked, as well as by the story of the recently founded Japan Fundoshi Foundation. The force behind it, Mr. Ito, fell ill and was largely confined to his home for six months, during which time he stumbled across the world of fundoshi.
