NASA MERCURY FRIENDSHIP 7 SPACE CAPSULE DESK TOP DISPLAY MODEL FROM RTM DISPLAY MODELS On February 20, 1962 at 14:47 hours John Glenn lifted off from Launch Complex 14 at Cape Canaveral Florida in the Mercury Space Capsule named Friendship 7 atop an Atlas LV-3B launch vehicle. The mission (designated MA-6) was the first successful attempt by NASA to place an American Astronaut into earth orbit. Friendship 7 piloted by John Glenn made three orbits of the earth and after a total of four hours and 56 minutes in flight, Friendship 7 re-entered the earth's atmosphere for a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean and was safely taken aboard the U.S.S.
