This is a great victorian silverplate ice water pitcher made by the Meriden Britannia Co. during the 1870's. It has a classic tankard form that is decorated with vertical bands of engine turning and chased leafy branches. One side is engraved, "Mr. & Mrs.David Houston". The handle has a warrior's head, the back of his helmet serves as a thumb rest. The pitcher has a white enamel liner. This double walled construction was intended to keep ice water cold during the summer in the days before refrigeration and air conditioning. I also read somew that these ice water pitchers were also a sign of support for the temperance movement and that their display in the parlor informed visitors that alcohol was not served in that house. This ice water pitcher is marked, "Meriden B. Co." within a circle and around a shield containing a balance scale. Below are, "Pat'd. June 13, 1868" and "Pat'd Nov. 3d, 1868". The ice guard on the inside has a third patent date of July 9, 1872. The condition of this ice water pitcher is great, t is no loss of silverplate and only one ping to report on the exterior. The enamel liner is pristine, no stains or rust. It stands 14 1/2" tall, is 10 3/4" wide, handle to spout and the base has a diameter of 7 1/2". It weighs over six pounds.
