Merritt Island Melvin Casper Old Florida Art Pottery Candle Holder with Hurrican Shade! This is a 1960's piece produced in Florida by the renowned potter Melvin Casper in 1937. Casper and his mother, Peggy Jamison, moved to Merritt Island from Chicago and began producing unglazed ware. After serving in the military during WWII, Casper returned to Merritt and is responsible for maintaining this unique "old Florida" coastal pottery for six decades. Casper remains t today teaching and making pottery, at 84 a master potter. He is featured in the book "Old Florida Pottery" if you want more information. This stunning example of his work exhibits his unique skills in freeform pottery "cut outs" through the red earthenware! The candle holder and hurricane shade are finished in a rich flambe glaze with frothy GULF STREAM BLUE running down from the top rim, a lighter layer with touches of rutile at the cut out edges cover the lower two thirds of the hurrican shade. The shade measures 6 1/2 inches high and 4 inchs in diameter. The candle holder measures 6 inches wide. Both of the two pieces are marked Merritt Island as is normal. Both are free of chips, cracks, damage of any kind. It is RARE TO FIND both pieces together with no damage what so ever!
