This is a double portrait of the champion, John Henry, former leading money winning race horse of all time, with earnings in excess of $6 million. In 1991, this piece sold for $450.00 ABOUT THE ARTIST: Merry Kelly Stevens has been called the "first lady of sporting art." She gained international recognition, mainly in the field of race track and farm paintings; including portraits of some of the finest horses in the U.S.Stevens is one of the most noted equine artists in the U.S. Her work is spread throughout Canada, Europe and Asia; depicting the horse in its multi-faceted moods of strength, gentleness, intelligence, and athletic prowess. Her commissions have come from such places as the Santa Anita Race Track, the Bay Meadows Race Track, The Northern California Thoroughbred Association, and numerous private collectors. Stevens was profiled in the "Northern California Thoroughbred" in the Fall of 1980. Stevens had a gallery in Solvang, California and is probably one of the finest horse artists in the world.
