We are tickled to offer for auction this handsomeMerrythought Punkinhead teddy bear. Punkinhead was commissioned in the late 1940’s by Eaton's Department store in Toronto, Canada, and made exclusively by Merrythought of London as the store’s mascot. He was created as competition for Rudolph, who was being promoted during the holiday season by a rival store. Punkinhead came in various sizes and was beloved as the teddy bear that saved Christmas. The story surrounding Punkinhead is that, one year, Santa did not have enough hair to complete the dolls in time for Christmas. Punkinhead, being a bear of honor and sacrifice, offered Santa his 'topknot' to use for the doll hair, as it always grew back. Because of this story, many children cut the topknot of their Punkinhead, so it is rare to find one unscathed. This particular chap must have had an owner with less of a barber’s streak in him. Over the years, h e became the hero of several storybooks, as well as the leader of the store’s annual Santa Claus parade. Standing 15 inches tall, his body is made of brown mohair with a gold mohair chest and ear linings. He has a velvet muzzle and feet. All of his features are hand-stitched in black thread. His beige long pile mohair inset topknot is very distinctive and, as previously stated, miraculously intact. He has yellow felt shorts, with a read more
