Offered is a really interesting METAL RABBET PLANE WITH A TYPE I CUTTER (NOV. 18, 1884) maker unknown. This plane has the features of several of STANLEY'S metal planes. This plane measures 10 inches in total length from toe to tip of rear handle. The smooth plane bed measures 8 inches in length. The blade iron has the date "pat'd. Nov 18, 1884" stamped at the top. This date refers to Justis Traut's patent date for the Stanley #78 duplex plane. However, this plane's iron cutter is attached to the body via a single screw-pivot point and hold down screw, just like the Stanley 39 Dado Plane. The strange thing is that this plane does not have a skewed cutter, spurs, or an adjustable depth stop as does the Stanley 39. Also, the width of the cutter iron is an odd size of 1 1/16 inches, which no Stanley plane offers. Lastly, this plane is not like the Stanley 78 as it does not have a duplex or bull-nose feature, the iron hold down and adjustments are not the same, and the sizes are all wrong. This plane may be closest to the Stanley 378, but it does not, nor are t signs it ever had, an adjustable fence, depth stops, humped metal body, or other adjustment features. This plane's manufacture is quality. I believe it is a one-of-a-kind as I purchased this plane from the estate of a former pattern maker, the majority of tools being in the metal-machinist's trade. It is possible the plane' s design was copied, using ideas from Stanley's 39 dado plane, 78 duplex plane and the 378 Rabbet plane. The cutter iron used WAS however from a type 1 Stanley 78 plane. Please see for yourself that this plane is very interesting and unique. I like the design hump located in the center top of the plane. The "knob" that holds down the plane iron is an older type metal bolt. This would make a great conversation piece plane or a great user for that special project needing a rabbet plane. Please see photos for details. Winning bidder to pay $8.50 Priority Mail shipping costs . Thank you for looking and good luck. grp
