Mettlach V&B Villeroy and Boch Stein You are bidding on a Mettlach Villeroy and Boch beer stein or krug. This particular stein appears to have been manufactured in 1904 from the foorm 2936 for The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, an American social club and fraternal organization founded in 1868, then called the Jolly Corks apparently. The stein has a clear Mettlach abbey mark as well as Ges Gesch, 2936, II, and 04, as well as some markings of unkown purpose 21, either 10 or 19, and a faint incision that looks like it might be a small, capital D. There is some green residue on the bottom, possibly left over from a mercury mark. The side of the stein is marked 1/2 L.This stein has a nice wavy blue design with a main scene on the front of the stein featuring an Elk's head framed by a wreath of flowers, a roman numerals clock, and a series of ribbons reading, "benevolent", "protective", "order"," elks", and two other words that were difficult to read either because of the font or perhaps they are in another language. The main scene has been accented with a light purple color and the clock's hands are pointing to the XI and XII respectively. The lids insert has a set of antlers, presumably an elk's antlers and is also accented with the same light purple. The thumblift has both the elk's head and the clock again and again the clock's hands are poiting to XI and XII respectively.This stein seems to be in generally good condition with no major fractures or chips that we could find, however there is a very thin line visible on the bottom of the stein and on the inside, this did not photograph well but it is faintly visible just above the 21 in the bottom mark closeup, it is unknown if this will affect water tightness. There are two small cracks at the rim of the stein which seem to terminate at the upper blue border on the outside of the stein and go up, folding over the rim and extending into the stein for about 1/4", pictured, they are not easily visible unless you are examining the stein. There is a little bit of wiggle at the hinge and some wiggle at the strap connecting the lid to the handle. This item has not been cleaned.Approximately 9" tall including thumblift and 4 1/2" in diameter, not including handle.This item is an antique item.
