is the perfect accent piece for anyone who admires handcrafted ethnic art. This hand-carved marquetry wall hanging is from Mexico, purchased on the Pacific Coast more than 20 years ago. It has a diameter of 13.75" across and is 1.25" thick. T is a rich variety of inlaid woods ranging in color from the very lightest to almost black. T are also inserts of warm russet colors and yellows. The Mexican gentleman we bought this piece from said the design was based on the Mayan zodiac. Please look closely at the pictures (t is a function to enlarge the photos) to see how cleverly the Mayan faces have been imbedded into the design. Bordering the outer rim is a pattern of stripes of light and dark wood to give it a visual frame. The surface is varnished and glossy looking, making photos hard to take because of reflection. The art is UNDAMAGED, however, its natural aging and changes in humidity have caused some of the wood pieces to split. The most visible splits are on the striped border. To me, this feature gives the piece a more authentic character, not less. T are, of course, small imperfections that are expected in handcrafts--which actually give the items their unique humanity and charm that cannot be found in factory-produced arts.
