Very Colorful Chivo [ Goat ] Mask fro Carnival Dances; this wonderful Mask comes from El Nante in the State of Hidalgo; the overall lenght of this Mask from top of the very big goat Horns to bottom of Beard is 25"; the mask itself is: 9" high and 7 1/8" wide; These Chivo masks are used at the Carnival in El Nante and the neighboring town of San BartoloTotopec, they are carved in hardwood, the whimsical expression is achieved through a twist to the nose and a wide grin in the mouth, relief carving around the eyes and face further add to the dynamic effect; the beard is attached with a leather strip across the chin;the horns are decorated with colorful ribbons, older masks seem to be painted in pale or subdued colors while newer Masks are more bright and colorful. This is truly and unusual Mask and great in any serious collection of Mexican Masks; Masks like these are getting more rare and hard to find; if you have any questions please mail me, and Thank you for looking and bidding You might have noticed the small, tiny whole in the front and back of this Mask, it was once infested with the small lictus beetle, this is very common in Mexican mask and t is NO infestation in this mask, as it was treated several years ago.
