ORIGINAL AND VINTAGE......... WILL SHUSTER ............... DEER DANCE, TAOS PUEBLO 1949........... SCARCE SHUSTER, ONE OF HIS BEST...............ONE OF FIVE NOW LISTED................ 2nd DEER DANCE FROM THE ESTATE........... This is an Original and Vintage 8.75" x 7" etching on paper by the master printmaker in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of the Cinco Pintores, Will Shuster, 1893-1969. Shuster was a far better etcher than he was a painter. This image shows the deer dance at Taos Pueblo. Signed in pencil at lower right and signed again at lower left corner with initials, in pencil (not signed in the plate). Dated Nov. 21, 1949 in pencil at lower left. At lower left is also stated that this is the FIRST STATE, and is obviously in black ink, unlike the first etching we sold last month from the estate, in sepia. The size of the sheet is 12.5" x 8.75". Fine impression with real rich darks. The biography follows: A realist and early modernist painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and sculptor, Will Shuster became known primarily for his work in New Mexico where in 1920, he settled in Santa Fe, having been encouraged to come there by John Sloan. He had studied electrical engineering at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and later was a student of Sloan's in Santa Fe in both etching and painting.
