I AM GUESSING THAT THIS SPIRAL BOUND BOOKLET IS A COPY OF AN UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT TITLED "LAUGHING WOMAN : MEMORIES OF A TRADING POST LIFE" BY MADGE NEWCOMB. THE BOOK'S CONTENTS ARE A COLLECTION OF ACCOUNTS AND OBSERVATIONS AND A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF MADGE PENTONY NEWCOMB WHO MOVED TO NEW MEXICO IN 1913 TO JOIN HER HUSBAND CHARLES ON THE NAVAJO RESERVATION IN NASCHITTI. IN 1918 THE NEWCOMBS MOVED TO CRYSTAL SIXTY MILES NORTH OF GALLUP. MADGE WAS KNOWN AMONG THE LOCALS AS "ASDZ ANI ADLOHI" OR "LAUGHING WOMAN". THE PAGES INCLUDE A POEM BY FREDERICK HOFFMAN WRITTEN FOR MADGE IN 1920, A FEW POEMS BY MADGE, SEVERAL ILLUSTRATIONS BY JOHN HAVENS DATED 1981 AND MANY EARLY MEMORIES AND STORIES OF NATIVE AMERICAN LIFE IN THE CRYSTAL AREA. THE PAGE PRINT IS DARK AND BOLD AND THE TEXT INCLUDES NUMEROUS MARKS AND CORRECTIONS (NOT HAND DONE). I FIND NO REFERENCE TO THE EXISTENCE OF THIS TITLE AND AM GUESSING THAT A FEW COPIES WERE HAND PRINTED AND BOUND PERHAPS FOR FAMILY MEMBERS OF MADGE NEAR THE END OF HER LIFE.

THERE IS A SMALL BACK COVER STAIN AND TWO SMALLER SPOT STAIN ON THE FRONT COVER BUT THIS SPIRAL BOUND BOOK IS OTHERWISE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

BUYER TO PAY ACTUAL FREIGHT EXPENSES ONLY. THE PACKAGED BOOK WEIGHT SHALL NOT EXCEED ONE POUND. I ACCEPT ALL STANDARD FORMS OF PAYMENT.
