Mexico: Sc. C93 on 1939 Sarabia record flight cover, scarce In 1939, Mexican aviator Francisco Sarabia made a non-stop flight from Mexico City to New York City, improving Amelia Earhart's previous record time by almost 4 hours. The flight was in conjunction with the opening of the World's Fair. As with Amelia Earhart's flight, a special airmail stamp was prepared, and used on covers carried on the flight. Altogether, 746 stamps were produced, and about half of them used on covers. Sarabia's flight ended in a tragedy. From New York, Sarabia flew to Washington DC to deliver a personal letter from President Cardenas to President Roosevelt. On takeoff from Wahington, his plane (last plane built by Granville Brothers, GeeBee QED Conquistador del Cielo ), lost power and plunged into the Potomac river. Granville planes were very fast, but had claimed a disproportionate number of pilots lives. ____________________________________________________________ CONDITIONS OF SALE: PLEASE READ.
