This Spoon has been in a Private Collector's Vault since its issue and is being offered to the public for the first time in almost 90 years! History of Copenhagen's Christmas Spoons EVERY YEAR in early June, the shop window of the House of Michelsen at 11 Bredgade, Copenhagen, features an annual display, a single centerpiece - Michelsen's Christmas spoon. Groups gather eagerly and then move down the cobblestone street making room for more admirers. Christmas spoons by Michelsen are a superb example of one of Denmark 's Christmas products. Made from sterling silver, the bowls are gold-plated and the handles are richly embossed with multicolored enamel in brilliant shades. Many of them echo the story of the first Christmas in Bethlehem. Since 1910, they have been produced yearly by the A. Michelsen Company in Copenhagen, insignia jewelers for the Danish royalty. The House of Michelsen has been making commemorative spoons for the Danish royal family since 1898, beginning with one designed by Hans Tegner for the 80th birthday of King Christian II. Its spectacular reception eventually led to the first annual Christmas spoon in 1910. The rich beauty and festive holiday illustrations, the fact that the dies for earlier spoons have been destroyed, and the special hallmark give the spoons increasing value. As years go by, more of the dies are destroyed, raising the value of those spoons too. Anton Michelsen, founder of the company, was born in Odense (the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen) in 1809, a son of the highly respected blacksmith Peder Michelsen. Anton decided to trade the smithy's forge for the artisan's crucible, and in his early teens was apprenticed to Europe 's leading silversmiths. He served his apprenticeship in Paris and Berlin , returning to Copenhagen in 1840. To be considered a master of the art, the apprentice had to create an original object to warrant his status. Anton's piece was a teapot of pure classicism, approved by the Academy of Fine Arts. The royal court gave him much patronage, including the decorating of a gold cup set with diamonds.
