Up for auction is the very rare Mickey Mouse Book published in 1930 by Bibo & Lang. This is the First Edition - complete with no missing pages and no writing anyw in the book! This is one of the rarest Mickey Mouse collectibles. A true holy grail for any Disneyana or comic collector! In early 1930, Walt Disney allowed one of his studio's earliest licensees, Bibo & Lang, to print the first Mickey Mouse publication simply titled - The Mickey Mouse Book. Really more of a comic book, the 16 pages contained The Mickey Mouse Story, the Mickey Mouse March and the Mickey Mouse Game. The first edition of the book was almost exclusively offered to and purchased by theatre owners to be sold to or given out to children who were members of their local Mickey Mouse Clubs. Given this very few have survived. Almost all are missing pages 9 & 10 as they contained the board game and were eagerly torn out by the children lucky enough to get a copy to play with. Complete ones that did survive are often full of writing from their former owners. After the first edition, upwards of 100,000 copies were printed in at least five subsequent editions. In these later editions many changes were made to the book , making the first edition especially unique. Some of the well known changes to the book include revisions to the song (Mickey kills a giant in this first edition - not very wholesome), the name of Bobette Bibo, the publisherâe(tm)s daughter, is added to the title page, a spelling correction on page three, two revisions to the game b oard ; the addition of two Mickey Mouse comic strips and the addition of âeoePrinted in U.S.A.âe to the front cover. Some subsequent editions were printed from the first edition printing blocks and are occasionally offered as "true" first editions but these contain the words "Printed In U.S.A." on the cover. An extremely well known auction house made this mistake just last month! This copy of the first edition is in amazing condition. A picture of every page is included below. I have never seen a true first edition in better condition. Ted Hake's Official Price Guide of Disneyana Collectibles puts a value of $5400 - $11,000. If you do a quick search on Ebay, you will find a complete later edition being offered for slightly less then $6000 and an incomplete later edition for about a third of that. Fortunately, our acquisition cost for this book was far below its value and allows us to have an opening bid it for substantially less then its books value, allowing this to be purchased not just for enjoyment but as an investment.
