THIS AUCTION IS FOR AN AWESOME MICRONESIAN CARVED COLORED STORYBOARD FROM PALAU RARE!! STORY OF THE FISH BEARING TREE OF NGIPTAL ISLAND SIGNED This is a very unique piece! It is a wood carving telling a story. It is painted and the colors is still very vivid and bright. The story is taped on the back of the piece.... is what it says: THE FISH BEARING TREE OF NGIPTAL ISLAND In olden days t was an island named Ngiptal, near the village of Ngial, and on its shore an old woman lived alone. The old woman had a son named Mengidabrutkoil, but she never knew w he was or what he was doing, for instead of looking after his mother, Mengidabrutkoil used to travel through other villages. The Ngiptalese used to pass by the home of the old woman each day as the returned from the sea with their fish, but none of them would ever offer her any of their catch, and though the old woman was particularly fond of certain fish, she was never able to eat them One day, after a particularly long absence, Mengidabrutkoil came home to visit his mother, and she had a chance to complain to her son that while other had plenty to eat she never had a fish for her pot. Mengidabrutkoil listened to his mother's complaint, and before setting out on his next trip he went out into the yard of his mother's house. Coming to a breadfruit tree growing by the water' s edge, he chopped off one of its branches. W the branch had been cut off, water immediately gushed from the tree, flowing spasmodically to the rhythm of the waves on the shores. With each surge, a fish leaped out of the tree. This tree became the envy of all the other people on the island. "While we must go out to sea for out fish, the old woman can get all she wishes by sitting under her tree," the complained, until finally an envious old man stole over to the wonderful fish-bearing tree one night and chopped it down. The water that had hitherto flowed forth intermittently, now burst out in torrents, and very soon the whole island was flooded. To this day the site of this island, with its paved roadways and its courtyards, can be seen shimmering beneath the water off the shore of Ngiwal. MICRONESIAN HANDICRAFT SHOP Kwajalein, Marshall Island I got this from an Estate Sale. It is signed (carved on the back) NGIRAIBUUCH S (Ngiraibuuch Skedong?). It measures approximate 26" x 11" x 1/2". It is in very good condition...color is still good, no cracks or splits in the front, but t is a small natural split on the back side. It has a slight bow to it, but nothing that interferes with the beauty of this outstanding piece. In doing my research, I was able to find something on the internet at the Interior Museum website about a Ngiraibuuch Skedong and I believe that this may be his work. I don't know for sure, but it looks like it, but because I can't ask the previous owner, I will leave it up to the bidders to decide. If it is, I believe this would be from between 1940 & 1960. I also read that Ngirabuuch was one of the first artists trained in the old tradition storyboards and that he was one of the storyboard masters of Palau. I am listing another Micronesian Carved Storyboard from Palau by Ngiraibuuch. I have it shown in my pictures, but this auction is just for the one described above.
