Mid-19th Century Amethyst 15 karat Gold Bangle Bracelet. The bracelet is intricately handmade of 15 karat yellow gold. The band of the bangle is made of 5 separate bands of gold which are carefully fastened together every Ã,¾ of and inch all around the back of the bangle and on the front the bands are held together by the gemstone settings. The bangle is set with 6 hand cut and hand set Amethyst natural gemstones. The center two Amethysts are 1.25 carats each, the next two from the center are .80 points of a carat and the last two on the end of the row are .50 points of a carat or Ã,½ carats each. The total carat weight is more that 5 carats of gemstone in the bracelet. The other interesting design of this original bangle is that three different settings were used for the six gems. The center two have a crown setting of 8 prongs each, and they are set though the gold band so light can pass through the setting. The next two amethysts are set on top of the band with 4 prongs each in a design called simple crowns and the last two end stones are set with 8 prong crown setting on top of the bands also. This bangle would have taken a great deal of time and talent for a gold smith of the period. The bracelet came from a collector of 40 years and is in wonderful condition. He dated it to be 1860 to 1865 in age. It has a strong clasp which is original and a replaced gold safety chain. The size is 6 Ã,¾ inches for the inside measurement, is pretty much an average size wrist of today. Handmade gemstone gold bangles are very hard to fine today and this is in wonderful condition.
