This painting was created by Roy Besser in the 1950's for the Pepsi Cola Sophisticates advertising campaign. This is the ad campaign that put Besser on the map as an advertising artist, illustrator, and Art Director, when he was handpicked by legendary actress Joan Crawford , and her husband, Pepsi Cola Chairman of the Board , Al Steele, to spearhead the Sophisticates ad campaign. If you're a Pepsi Cola memorabilia or illustration collector, or a fan of Roy Besser, then the young subject wearing this Black hat has to be familiar to you, since she was used more than once in Pepsi ads. Pepsi's advertising message and logo would be placed in the vacant space next to the woman. There is a location on the lower part of the painting where the gesso seems uneven. Besser seemed to paint right over it. There are two small droplet marks, perhaps sweat. Easily gessoed , or painted over, but not by me. I'm no artist. And there is one long sweeping subtle scratch in the painting. This is from the 50's folks. It's amazing that this painting, and many of his earlier illustration paintings still even exist, since he used to throw a lot of his earlier works away. The last Besser painting that I sold that had been used in a Pepsi ad was for over $3000, several years ago, but considering this is an auction, I'll start with a lower opening . 18 1/2 read more
