MID CENTURY DANISH STYLE INTERNATIONAL ASTRA STAINLESS FLATWARE SET designed by Milton Gonshorek - 48 stainless steel pieces - 8 six-piece placesettings [6 teaspoons, 6 ice tea spoons, 6 tablespoons/soup spoons, 6 dinner forks, 6 salad knives, 6 serated edged dinner knives]. This set is from the early 1960's. The Astra design was discontinued in 1967. The designers at International created space age period 1960's flatware, borrowing concepts and shapes from the flatware designs of contemporary modern designers like George Jensen, Quistgaard, Arne Jacobsen and Erik Herlow, but adding their own distinctive look, such as the geometric shapes in the handles (see picture) Consistent with the great geometric detailing, the tip of each handle is beveled. Each piece, except for the knives, is stamped on the bottom of the handle with International Stainless Deluxe.
Stated on page 287 of "Modernism in American Silver" (published in conjunction with the exhibition "Modernism in American Silver: 20th-Century Design" which was organized by the Dallas Museum of Art): "The two trends in design that characterized contemporary sterling flatware after the 1960 "Designed for Silver" exhibition carried over into stainless production. Stainless patterns by the staff designer Milton Gonshorek (1918-1998) for International illustrate the contrasting aesthetic positions. The name of "Astra", a sleek, complex sculptural form that was introduced in1963 (fig.15-4), alluded to celestial bodies, astronauts, and outer space, a connection that was emphasized in promotional literature...." The Astra fork pictured on that page is from the collection of The Charles L. Venable and Martin K. Webb Collection. See my other auctions for serving pieces and extra miscellaneous pieces. Just do a search for INTERNATIONAL ASTRA. CONDITION: Very good used condition, as pictured. (Some of the knives have a little "fleabite" pitting on the blades that is visible only on very close inspection). Shipping in the lower 48 states will be $24 USPS priority - all other locations MUST contact me for a shipping quote before bidding. Insurance is optional. I will combine shipping if you participate in other auctions and win. Please feel free to ask lots of questions. I will answer all of them as long as it is at least 12 hours before the end of the auction. It is possible that I may have missed a detail in my description or photos. I am always willing to send additional photos if requested. I will always disclose any condition problems that I can find. If an item is an antique, I may not always know the period or style. Please ask about shipping BEFORE you bid!!! - Especially international bidders...If the second chance offer is not accepted, I lose money on the listing - I will leave a negative feedback if a retraction is requested because of shipping costs. NOTE: I may need to adjust the insurance amount at the end of a sale. Ebay doesn't give the seller an option to list insurance amounts based on selling price when doing a listing. If a buyer decides not to insure an item, I WILL NOT be responsible for breakage or loss in shipment. On pickup only items, please inspect the item carefully before taking it home. Once it leaves my house, any breakage or loss is the buyers responsibility. PAYMENT: Personal AND Cashiers checks must clear my bank (usually 7 to 10 days) before I can ship an item. I will always try to deposit checks on the first working day after I receive them. Payment must be received within 7 working days of auction's end unless I hear from you to discuss options. If you are sending a check, PLEASE let me know - the mail is sometimes slow and I won't know if payment has been sent. If I don't hear from the buyer within 7 days (including weekends) of auction's end, I WILL relist the item. T have been cases when the buyer will be "out of town" at auction's end. Please let me know if this is a possibility. I try to ship items within 3 working days of payment (or cleared checks). If I can't, I will contact y...
