Mengel formed the Mengel Furniture Co. sometime following the Civil War in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to household furnishings, they also produced wooden washing machines and boxes in various sizes. What was to become the furniture division was opened as the Mengel Body Co. in 1923 at 4th & Colorado (then H Street) to manufacture automobile body parts, in the days when bodies were built with wooden frames. Their furniture production started about the mid 1930's after the automobile industry had changed to steel construction. Take advantage of this deal! There are very minor small nicks and scratches here and there from everyday use. *I photographed two small veneer chips near the drawer pulls on the chest of drawers. Right side base of nightstand has a few tiny chips. The sliding door of the bookcase headboard sticks a little. There is no structural damage. No messy water rings or unsightly damage. Drawers work well. Mirror is spectacular! The owners really cared for this bedroom set. They cared enough to go through the expense of having glass tops made for the dresser, chest and nightstand.
