Offered for sale is a traditional Shimizu landscape painting on canvas . Prominent pastel colors of blues and greens, contrasted with black, creates an idylic Springtime image of a wooded area near a lake. For years, Mihato Shimizu (1905 - 1987) was recognized as one of Japan's leading landscape painters. Shimizu studied under the internationally acclaimed artist Gakuryo Nakamura. In 1964, Shimizu's works were introduced to America, and quickly became sought after. They were only available through California galleries as the artist, by temperament, opposed to producing mass paintings. His works are gorgeous with a soft, misty, ethereal quality. His wooded scenes were painted on all four major islands of Japan. Signed in black, lower left. The image is 20" by 24". The framed dimensions are approximately 28 inches by 32 inches. The four inch wide frame is in three sections. An outer silver wooden frame with a matching inner silver insert . The middle cloth mat section of the frame is approximately two inches wide and shows its age as it is slightly dirty and worn. The outer frame section has some dings, scuffs and light scratches consistent with its age. As is standard on the custom made frames for this artist, there is a nameplate on the lower center.
