Military Campaign/Accoutrement Table. Original period table. Possibly Reb in origin. Comprised of hard maple that grows in the Southern aspect of the states. Walnut, of course, also is ubiquitous in the Southern states. The maple top also exhibits Bird's Eye Maple figuring....After the outbreak of the Civil War, the need for campaign furniture was greatly accentuated. Officers and soldiers alike were posted all across America. For everyday spent in battle, Yank and Reb passed weeks, months, fighting other enemies: specifically, heat and cold, hunger, deprivation, and worst of all, boredom. This table would have been under the canvas in the officer's tent. Enlisted men sat on the ground, on blankets, most of their days. Campaign tables were used for short and long combat strategies, map development and reading, accoutrements and maybe eating. The Campaign Table is in excellent condition. The top is maple and exhibits a beautiful original surface patina. Cleat is oak and walnut and is constructed with oak pegs. Turned legs are walnut. Military Campaign furniture is exceedingly hard to find and this table is beautiful. Table top is solid and one inch in thickness. Most Campaign furniture folded for necessity and lack of space in the tent...The table has a natural tilt , in the middle, it is a folding unit. Dimensions are top 23" by 24".
