Hi,the following set of medals were passed down to me when i was 14 yrs old they are genuine to the best of my knowledge, i am 58 yrs old now so i have had them for 44 yrs. the following information is what i was told by grandparents, the collection of 4 medals including military medal, meritorious service medal, were awarded too serjeant E proctor (edwin) all 4 medals have his name rank etc on the edge of the medals, the details are- SJT E PROCTOR 480070 R.E. (royal engineers) he was a Sheffield man. before the war he was in the terriers ( i am not up on this. territorials ?) he was a sheffield tram driver. i understand he returned to this at the end of the war. he didnt last long though as he was gassed in the war, and died a few years after the wars end." the M.M. i was told he held a bridge under enemy fire. while his men got to safety" the meritorious service medal. i dont know, only that so many were awarded,every year. and in 1916 they were awared for bravery etc "although not under enemy fire" a few notes i have collected include " RE Terriers SJT Date of gazette 60 reg paper 0137/ meritorious service (france) i trust that means he was awarded it in france. other details i have found are in the pics with medals- other details i have come across are ( although i have not followed up) the national archives ( tna) online document (medal rolls) Sjt E proctor 480070 R.E. WO 372/23 - WO 372/24 -WO 372/16 anybody that wishes to look into this will find . i do believe its at least 3 medal awards. also i was once told that he probably had an oak leaf on one of the medal ribbons ( M.I.D) on the medals only one has a ribbon and the one you see in the pic is the wrong one i do believe, they are not dear to replace. please look closely at the pic of initial paperwork search from the national archives on the third medal roll no.theres some interesting info. no,s etc. anyway i do believe someone would enjoy themselves following all this info up. and if anybody needs any more info please feel free to contact me.. -ps i have set a reserve. and as for the postage costs i,ve put, i havent a clue i put £10. but rest assured they will be sent securely.regards , regards Bruce I.ve just put 3 more photos on, with more information on Serjt edwin proctor. he is on the roll off honour in St Cuthberts church, firvale, Sheffield., The cemetery where he is buried (city rd sheffield) along with his grandson aged a few weeks old when he died . whoever purchases the medals,and would like a photograph of serjt proctors headstone, at city road cemetery.i would gladly go and get one and forward it on, the pleasure would be mine, as for st cuthberts church were serjt proctor is on the roll of honour, as time allows, i would provide a photo of that as well, with the churchs permission,serjt proctor was a bareknuckle fighter in sheffield pre 1914, a fairly common occupation at the time, on his grave stone it says "motorman" i,ve looked it up and its an old term for "tramdriver". i have heard in one of the sheffield establishments there is a memorial to corporation tramdrivers (motormen) killed in the first world war ?.please dont hesitate to ask anything else. ps " the sheffield indexers"website is where i got the cemetery, burial details from, i it is of interest to anyone.I have a copy of the 1901 census, Edwin Proctor is listed as 13 yrs old. born 1889,and he was a table knife cutter, his address was ecclesall bierlow. sheffield. in the 1911 census (sheffield there was 9 people in the household.he was 22 married. and was a colliery trammer. a nearby colliery was the "nunnery colliery" was probably the one he worked at. read more
