We are selling an wonderful collection of antique figural milk glass. This is a figural victorian glass novelty toothpick holder or match holder in milk glass. This goes by several names: Minstrel Boy, Black Boy, Negro Boy, etc. This milk glass piece was made c. 1900. It is shown in Heacock's "1000 Toothpick Holders" book, #372. In that reference book, it's called "Negro Boy". In a very old reference book on milk glass by Warman, it is #15B and it's called Minstrel Boy Inkwell. The space on the inside is shaped like a toothpick holder. Also the nappy hair can be the match striking surface, so I think inkwell is a stretch . Color of the glass is the old mellow, opalescent white of turn of the century novelties. Size is 3 inches high. surface. Condition is good for this piece. No major chips or losses. Just normal wear along the base, which you can feel as shallow flaking to the overfill on the bottom edge. Typical of antique molded milk glass. T is something that appears to be little hairlines with dirt in it on the underside. But these are stress lines in the making, that after 100 years, get some dirt in . This is typical of 100 year old novelty milk glass. Advance collectors will know what I mean. This can be bleached out if you like, but it has been in a great collection for so long like this. It's not damage. If you collect milk glass, figural toothpick holders or match holders, or black memorabilia, this is a beauty! This is a scarce item in fairly good condition. The details in the molding are superb: He is wearing a high collared shirt and bow, and has a pleasing smile. He sits on a ribbed pedestal, which again, may be the striking surface for matches. T are no traces of paint .
