This miniature 2 7/8" by 5" Navajo Weaving is woven by Sandra D. Brown of Lukachukai , Arizona . Sandra comes from the famous Brown/Bia/Woody family that does the finely woven miniatures. This is a miniature replica of the New Mexico Flag with the Zia symbol. is a description of the flag from : The yellow field and red symbol colors are the colors of Spain . First brought to New Mexico by Spanish explorers in 1540. On New Mexico 's flag we see a red sun with rays stretching out from it. T are four groups of rays with four rays in each group. This is an ancient sun symbol of a Native American people called the Zia. The Zia believed that the giver of all good gave them gifts in groups of four. These gifts are: * The four directions - north, east, south and west. * The four seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter. * The day - sunrise, noon, evening and night. * Life itself - childhood, youth, middle years and old age. All of these are bound by a circle of life and love, without a beginning or end. Miniature weavings are done on special small looms with much finer yarn than the larger rugs. I recently saw one of these special looms and a new book about creating these miniatures. Please email if you are interested in these details. These tapestry quality miniatures are as much work (take as much time) as a much larger weaving. These fine (high weft) miniatures retail for over $120! My goal is to support the weavers. I buy as directly as possible from the weavers and I pay them what they ask. They ask relatively so little for the skill and quality of their artistry. I'm sure they make less than minimum (hourly) wage. Your purchase helps keep this wonderful craft alive. Please click on the "Larger Picture" link to see the bigger pictures. The Kodak Color Control Patch in the scan provides a baseline for the color correction for your monitor so you can best judge the colors in the weaving. We counted 2 different colors of wool in this weaving (red and yellow). The scanner colors are truer than those taken with the camera which has a combination of natural, artificial and flash lighting. The fineness of a weave is often judged by the warp and weft count. Since Navajo (Navaho) Weavings are hand made and unique, the weft count can vary with different colors (thread thickness) and different parts of the weaving. I try to pick a color that is easy on my eyes to count, and somew near the middle of the rug. I count a warp of an amazing 18 per inch (consider getting the weaving comb in t!) and a weft, on one side of the rug, of about 45 per inch. Note that many sellers report the much more impressive sounding doubled ("both sides of the weaving") count of 90. These are the weft counts of a tapestry quality weaving. (The background storm pattern weaving has a warp of 11 and a single count weft of about 28.) All four corner tassels are intact. As an added sign of a quality weaving, this rug has a woven in side selvedge. If you have any questions, or want more images of the weaving, please email.
