Miniature portrait on ivory of child toddler holding a rattle and seated on a plaid hassock, with a rose-patterned rug at her/his feet. This is exceptional Early American folk art with all the bells and whistles. The tot, dressed like little a girl but amusingly looking like a little boy who can't stand it, sits resplendent in ruffled and bowed dress with vivid emerald green satin trim, and transfixes the viewer with big blue eyes. Note the baby fat on the arms. Oval by sight is 3Wx4H. Ivory inside is arched rectangle. Frame is 7Wx8.25"H. Framed under reverse painted glass surround with gold star corners. Period frame has beaded trim. Collectors know how rare it is to find a full length miniature ivory portrait, especially one of a 2-year-old, more especially one with such enchanting details. Ca. 1835.
