Extraordinary, oversize portrait painting on ivory depicting the Marquise de Saint Aubin seated with a flower in her hand and attired in 18th Century dress and hairstyle. It is signed by the artist "Karl" or "Kael" on the center right. "La Marquise de Saint Aubin (Augustin)" is handwritten on the cardboard backing. Augustin de Saint Aubin was an 18th Century French artist (1736- 1807) known for his drawings, watercolors, etchings and miniatures. The subject of this miniature appears to be his wife, nÃf©e Louise-Nicole Godeau (1742-1814). Augustin came from a family of artists, he was the son of royal embroiderer Gabriel-Germain de Saint-Aubin, brother of Gabriel Jacques de Saint-Aubin, painter, draftsman, and etcher, and of SÃf¨vres porcelain designer Louis-Michel de Saint-Aubin. It is a large miniature, about twice the standard size. The miniature is framed in brown wood with a bronze border. The image is protected by a convex glass. Additional photos available upon request.
