Up for auction is this beautiful little Cosmos miniature oil lamp. It can be seen in Smith's Miniature Lamps, book 1 on page 134, Fig. 286. If you have the book please look carefully at the photo t, and read the description. You will see that even on their lamp the paint is only about 50%, and as they say"paint not fired on usually missing". In the case of this lamp, the paint is fired on. I have owned 4 of these nice lamps over the years and have always kept this one back for myself because the paint on this lamp is simply wonderful. I believe my photos will confirm this. Many of the various pieces of painted milk glass in the Cosmos pattern suffer from weak or lost paint. The overall diamond pattern and the various flower blossoms are molded into the glass on both the font and the shade.This lamp has its original collar and nutmeg burner. The chimney could be a replacement as is common on the miniatures. The original flat wick is in the burner and the wick riser works fine. I have not attempted to clean any of the burner parts as I prefer the old patina on my burners. T is the usual coarsness on both rims of the shade. This is how they were shipped from the factory. The roughness is not, however, excessive on this lamp. On the inside of the shade t are 6 black specs which do not wash off with soap and water. I have not tried to remove them as they cannot be seen through the glass. T are also several very tiny specs on the outside, primarily on the base. Again, I have not tried to remove them except with dish soap and water. I will leave that up to the new owner. I feel they do not detract from the beauty and the colors on this nice piece. In 1982 Smiths valued this lamp at $325.00. The one I have up for auction is far nicer than the one they illustrate in their book. I have placed a low starting bid price on this item, and no reserve price. Thanks for your interest and good luck bidding.
