This is ONE pair of new crossover upgrade kits for the classic Radio Shack/Realistic Minimus 7 speakers.This kit follows the concept of the (then) famous upgrade published in the the 1988 Speaker Builder Magazine, and I have had a LOT of very happy emails and feedback about how well these work. are some feedbacks from mid Dec 06 to mid Jan 07...you can verify them yourself. Thanks!...April 13, '06 items work fine...April 8, '06 As the SB article points out, the Minimus 7's, with their solid 4 inch midbass speakers and their quality 1 inch dome speakers are jewels in the rough. This kit actually improves on the original upgrade in the article. Unfortunately, their crossover consists of a 12 dB/octave high pass filter (meaning one capacitor in series and one shunt inductor in parallel) for the tweeter, which proctects the tweeter well (at least as long as the cheap electrolytic capacitors hold up) but nothing for the woofer...athough the sound from the electrolytic tweeter capacitors tends to the hissy-spitty, mushy side.The really unfortuate part is that t is NO low pass crossover as such on the woofer. The design simply calls for cheap and inadequate approach of harvesting the innt inductance of the woofer's voice coil to choke off its high frequency output....which it does, sort of, but way too inadequately, with the result that the woofer operatates in the same range as the tweeter--only out of phase and cancelling out some of the tweeters output at critical frequencies. It is an audible problem and one that a multichannel equalizers can only partially cure.The solution is to do what the manufacturer should have done in the first place: put in a quality low pass crossover section on the woofer and replace the electrolytic capacitor on the tweeter circuit with a quality film capacitor.This kit does just that: It provides a proper low pass crossover for the woofer using a low resistance high quality cored inductor. (f you prefer an air coil inductor these are available by special request: this will not improve the sound, and it will even lower the woofer output slighlty to the sound quality's detriment and it looks ugly--since it so big that it has be mounted OUTSIDE the speaker cabinet on the back, but feel free to email).these come complete with an impedance compensating Zobel network (for an extra $4 you can even have the capacitors in the Zobel be never-ever-fail film types!-- the non-polar blue capacitors in this circuit do not affect the sound in any way, but t is a remote chance that after about 20 years or more they may drift in value, which should not make a difference you will notice ). If you want the forever good film caps, add $4 to the total and let me know at the time of payment.In either even the crossovers and circuitry are optimized to mate with the tweeter crossover. this more properly chokes off the woofer output in the tweeter range, allowing the fine tweeter to deliver its correct and sweet output.
