Mint 1780 XSF Silver Maria Tsa Thaler Coin on card. Diameter 39.5mm Alloy 833.3 fine silver Total weight 28.07g Fine weight 23.39g Card gives history of this trade dollar and is also in mint conditon. The coin depicts Maria Tsa who ruled the Hapsburg Empire from 1740 until her death in 1780. Maria Tsa although plagued by problems and wars when she inherited the throne from her father Charles VI, did manage sweeping reforms in both finance and education and is highly regarded among most historians. Maria Tsa gave birth to 16 children, including two future Roman emperors, and Marie Antionette, queen of France, thus tying her to most of the monarchies of Europe. She was the only woman to rule the Hapsburg Empire. The coin has been used world wide as trade coinage and also as a currency particularly in the Middle East. It is a large silver coin being slightly larger then a silver dollar. The inscription "M. TSIA D.G.R. IMP. HU. BO .REG." translates as: Maria Tsa, by the grace of God Roman Empress, of Hungary and Bohemia Queen. Below the bust one finds the initials "S.F.", which stand for the names of the two Günzburg mint officials in 1780, Tobias Schöbl (S) and Joseph Faby (F). The reverse shows the imperial double-headed eagle with the arms of Austria at the center, surrounded by four quarters representing Hungary, Bohemia, Burgundy and Burgau (Günzburg). The inscription reads "ARCHID. AVST. DUX. BURG. CO. TYR. 1780" and translates: Archduchess of Austria, Duchess of Burgundy, Countess of Tyrol, 1780. The raised edge of the coin has the motto of the Empress "Iustitia et Clementia" (Justice and Clemency) with various ornaments. Many collectors consider this one of the most beautiful coins ever minted. Please add $2.00 shipping Paypal, check or MO. Thank you for looking.
