A VERY LOVELY & QUITE RARE COLLECTOR'S ANTIQUE YOMUD-GROUP (Eagle-gol group?) TURKMEN OK-BASH TENT TRAPPING, Central Asia, West Turkestan, last third of the 19th century, and in full pile pristine condition. Exact size: 1'-8" x 2'-2" (51 x 66 cm). WOW = A beautiful antique 19th century Yomud family Ok-Bash woven with the highest quality wool and 100% natural, heavily saturated, vegetal-derived, dye lots including green, dark and medium indigo blues, apricot, brilliant madder red, and aubergine. The condition is PERFECT. The previous owner has opened up this bag for display, but it could easily be sewn back into its original form of an arrow quiver. These cherished yurt bags were used to store prescious personal items securely inside the tent and their purpose is not what the literature describes as "tent-pole covers". In antiquity, the Central Asian Steppe peoples were horse-mounted warriors who hunted and fought with bows and arrows and these textile relics are symbolic of the quivers that held arrows. Tent bags like this were made by and for women's use and are tfore made up of the best materials and woven with the utmost of care and perfection. IMPORTANT: The present specimen is very unusual inasmuch as it is asymmetrically knotted open to the right on natural wool warps and having a brown animal fiber (camel hair?) as wefts. This structure, together with the the color palette and the arrowhead bottom border motif, is in compliance with the dyes, technical structural analysis, and guard border design elements of "Eagle-gol" group II weavings.
