his striking quilt features a handsome bold Tree of Life block, but with a couple less standard twists that make it particularly rewarding. The accents in two double-pink fabrics add additional pop and strength to the tree shape with trios of diamonds filling in the top spaces along the trunk. Additionally, the quiltmaker chose a more challenging route than the standard straight trunk and pieced gentle, more realistic curves into her trunk as it branches up to support the crown of the tree. The quilt is gorgeously, lushly quilted with fantastically curving, roundy motifs adding a lacy background around the bold geometrics and strong contrasts of the pieced trees. The condition is absolutely mint and perfect, freshly washed for the first time and absolutely without a blemish. The era is difficult to pinpoint just based on the fabrics. That deep inky navy blue pindot (probably an Indigo) and the sweet double-pinks were standard issue for so many decades spanning two centuries. But based on the look of the double-pink with a confetti of tiny hearts I lean towards placing it in the first quarter of the 20th century over the late 19th. SizeThe quilt measures about 68" x 80" . The blocks are around 14 inches square and the half-square-triangles about 1 3/4 inches square. The borders are about 4 1/2 inches wide. Quilting The hand-quilting is exquisite with 9-11 tiny little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. Every small patch of the pieced trees is crisply inset-outline quilted just within its perimeter, with the trunk and pink squares getting additional sets of double-lines running up their centers. 5/8-inch square grid fills in the triangles at the lateral corners of the on-point block. The strange white shapes nestled beneath the crown of the trees and the blank open white blocks between are densely quilted in charming small-scale detailed designs featuring teardrops and scalloping. The faintest traces of pencil lines are still faintly visible here and there. The two borders are quilted in with freehand lines running diagonally, spaced 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch apart. (Continued from above) Construction The narrow 3/8-inch straight-grain binding is machine-pieced flat to the front, neatly turned to the back and hand-stitched tight. It appears to be entirely perfect. The batting is very thin and completely even with a lovely small bit of loft. The backing is nice strong, lightweight white sheeting, and save for a few little smudges and spots, in perfect shape like the front. Condition The quilt's condition is excellent and mint: strong, sturdy, crisp and clean, it shows no signs of use or fading and no blemishes whatsoever.
