This guy is the work of a true artisan with amazing attention to small details, that makes all the difference. This weighty yet durable masterpiece has hand painted fingernails, toenails, facial features and even satchel & prayer beads all done on a raised porcelain sitting buddha deity. He is a tall and girthy sculpture with a hole in his hand to place an incense stick just perfect for your personal alter, your mantle or just about any room inside or out. For us today, the Laughing Buddha image is a reminder of our own capacity to achieve happiness and life-satisfaction - of our capacity to achieve and enjoy the good life. IN MINT CONDITION! Made in China circa 1910-1930, this is in excellent condition, with no chips, repairs or cracks. The bottom has a circle with incised chinese symbols.The Buddha's mouth is open and he has holes in both his nose, ears, and cleverly painted cherry red mouth, also one hole in his left hand for the placement of incense. The Laughing Buddha derived its beginnings from a mix in Buddhist, Taoist, and Shinto religions and can be traced back to the time of the Liang Dynasty in China. He is theorized to have begun as a real Buddhist monk in China over 1,000 years ago. He was considered a man of good and loving character. It was said of his benevolent nature, that he was to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva and due to his large protruding stomach & smile, he was caricatured as the "Laughing Buddha." This statue depicts a stout, smiling or laughing bald man in robes carrying a set of prayer beads and a hemp bag with a largely exposed pot belly stomach symbolic for happiness, good luck, and plentitude.
