Hello all!! 2007 is going to be an incredible year for auctions!! It was a fantastic summer of cast iron hunting last year. I hit all the garage & estate sales, flea markets, antique shows & some Ebay treasures!!!! I have banks manufactured by AC Williams, Hubley, Astro/Duro, Chein, Arcade, J&E Stevens , Kenton and many more. I have branched out into some of my other cast iron interests, mainly doorstops & paperweights but I have some unexpected surprises as well. You are bidding on a C1920 art deco snail incense burner. Manufactured by an unknown American company c1920 or earlier, the book just says "Very Old" of this finish style. The snail is in great shape, the paint job is outstanding, hand painted in dull and bright gold, green and black. Beautiful detail as you can see in the picture it has a faux verdigris finish over the cast iron. I just learned that verdigris means "the green of Greece, referring to the ancient bronzes of that culture. The shell sits solidly attached on the cast iron frame, smome rises through holes in the top of the snails shell, looks very cool when it streams out!! Excellent paint , r etains 99%+ of the original finish, not 100% mint because it has been used to burn incense but t is virtually no damage to the paint. No cracks, chips or breaks unless stated. The burner is 3" tall x 5" long. This specific piece is not pictured in a reference book but a similar piece is pictured in Antique Cast Iron Identification and Values by Kaythryn McNerney, pg 168, center left. It is the owl version of this type of burner with the same faux verdigris finish. The picture is not in color but I happen to collect this type of CI and have the owl in two sizes & in a door stop, I have a set of cattle and two of these snails, these are one of my favorite pieces but I just don't need three of them!! This is an outstanding piece of CI that doesn't show up very often so don't miss it!! I suggest to the winner to print a copy of this auction, it will increase the resale value of your purchase tremendously having this information as a hard copy along with the bank. You are paying for this information, make use of it! Plus it's fun to look back in 20 years and say I only paid $200 for that way back when. Most of the banks today selling for $200-$400 were $15-$50 in the mid 1970's, big money when the reference guides I have were printed. Please ask any and all questions before auction ends.
