PRISTINE A++ ANTIQUE ANATOLIAN CAPPADOCIA PRAYER RUG, Central Anatolia, Province of Cappadocia, Avanos region, end of the 19th century to beginning of the 20th century (circa: 1890's to the end of WW I), and in MINT, full-pile, original condition for the collector or decorator. The exact size is: 3'-10" x 5'-4" (117 x 162 cm). This old carpet was found being used as a wall hanging meditation rug in Turkey. It seems to have never been walked upon. The weaving comes fresh to the market in absolutely full pile condition. Natural ivory wool warps and wool wefts dyed red. All the dye lots are 100% natural. Most of the original striped kilim end finishes are present and are now sewn back secure to prevent any loss of structure. The carpet possesses thick, soft, lanolin-rich, wool quality. It has been professionally cleaned to museum standards. Lovingly cared for over time, this lovely textile relic has NO rips, holes, tears, wear, loss of pile, reweaves, repairs, stains, odors, color run, or moth damage. It has been perfectly preserved for the sake of posterity. Collection ready. This rug will make a serene statement as a wall hanging in any home or office decorative environment. They just do NOT come in any better condition. It is interesting to note that both Greeks and Turks living in this region produced cottage-industry types with this open red field design. This particular specimen, with its lone water ewer below the mihrab (an Islamic symbol of faith), was probably woven by a Turkish woman. In the 1920's, under the reign of Ataturk "the great reformer", there was a forced repatriation. Greek families living in this area of Turkey were sent back to Greece and Turk families living in Greece were sent back to Turkey. I toured this area of Anatolia last summer and heard talk from the locals that families from both sides come back, often tearfully so, to visit the homes where they, or their families, once lived and were graciously and openly welcomed by the present home owners.
