New and Unsmoked - Pipemaker Horace DeJarnett Freehand Smoking Pipe This is a really beautiful New & Unsmoked Handmade Smoking Pipe by Pipemaker Horace DeJarnett . Horace is an Arizona pipemaker-- he has developed his unique style of Freehand Smoking Pipes and selling them thru the Arizona pipe stores and personal orders from fellow pipe smokers/collectors. ("Pipes, Aritisans and Trademarks by Jose Manuel Lopes" pg. 96) His name might be familiar due to the demand for his 'A' Grade (top of the line Freehands) which are coveted by pipe collectors . These freehands sell for $300.00 - $400.00 and more. Horace has a very simple 'grading system' for his pipes. An 'A' Grade is the 'Top Of the Line' - flawless (well, as flawless as a piece of Plateau Briar can be) and exceptional grain. DeJarnett next grade is: " Everything That is NOT an A Grade"! What this means to you (and to me, as I do have his pipes as part of my regular rotation) is that each of his pipes (to include this one) started from the same Top Quality Briar and attention to detail and design as those elite pipes that he considers an 'A'. The only real difference is that this pipe just did not make the coveted A grade. Horace works on every aspect of his pipe creations . He has no 'apprentice' to do the time consuming sanding and or finishing of the pipe. He personally picks out each piece of briar, buying the very best . The design is made by Horace and the briar block is carved to a rough shape of the design-- and the smoke hole and bowl are drilled. Next is the time consuming and very detailed work to continue the carving and sanding and shaping of the block to obtain his design . If flaws in the briar are noted an attempt is made to modify the design slightly (and rid the pipe of the imperfection). If this does not work, Horace may still complete the pipe as he only smokes his own pipes-- well, reject pipes that is. (Note: Horace does not use 'fills' in any of his pipes)! Over the many years Horace has been a professional pipe maker he has perfected a number of different hand rustication techniques. When the sanding and shaping process meets his 'artistic plan' for the design; the pipe will go thru the 'finishing' process (again, totally hand done by Horace). This can be as complex as a major hand rustication process .. in some cases it is just a second on the Carnuba wheel if anything-- it all depends on the design and the briar. Then a stem is picked out and/or modified to complete the pipe. If you are interested in a DeJarnett pipe and desire a different stem (I personally prefer lucite over vulcanite) you can ask him to change the stem for your liking. In order to contact Horace DeJarnett and to find out more about this pipemaker, may I suggest you visit his website. Be sure, while you are t, to also check out his 'sold' pipes-- it might give you some ideas of a design that you want and you can have him make it for you. His website is : / I think you will find that his workmanship is top of the line and his prices are still kept in a price range that virtually any pipe smoker/ collector can find something that they really like-- and without going over their planned budget! I am very pleased that Horace was willing for me to offer 5 of his Handmade pipes-- the grading of the pipes, as the highly competitive prices will show, are from the 'Everything Else' Grade!!! If you desire to check out an A grade DeJarnett pipe-- just stop at his website and ask-- he will give you the latest info on what is available and w you can view it. This is a terrific straight billiard Freehand by Horace. The pipe has some great grain-- lots of Straight Grain around the bowl . Despite its' size it is very comfortable and well balanced . The light finish highlights the wonderful grain patterns of the Plateau briar . The pipe has a kind of mult-color lucite stem. The bowl has a flat bottom and it is a 'sitter'. Overall length of about 6"; bowl height of 2 1/4" and inner bowl diameter of 3/4". The top o...
