This is a wonderful, minty set of promotional glasses marked UFS 1949. The UFS is United Feature Syndicate, which distributed Li'l Abner to thousands of daily newspapers.
I would call the glasses new, except the mailing box they were found in had succumbed to moisture and mold and I had to scoop them up and CAREFULLY wash each one in warm water and soap. But they came out shiny and bright and colorful. The photos fairly represent the colors, and t were some strange hues used. Each glass features an Al Capp Dogpatch character on one side with the ultimate human loving creature known as a Shmoo on the other (Except for the glass with Marryin' Sam on one side and the lady who has her own day, Sadie Hawkins, on the reverse. Or is it Sadie with Sam on the reverse?) The rest of the cast includes Lonesome Polecat, the sole? surviving member of the tribe of the same name. Unwashable Jones, who could make a polecat puke. The self-sacrificing Shmoo. Mammy Yoakum, strong as (and resembling) Popeye. Pappy Yoakum, mild mannered usually befuddled patriarch of the clan Yoakum. Li'l Abner, the scion of the clan, blessed with manly beauty and Mammy's strength, but an innocent from the neck up. Daisy Mae, the Dogpatch beauty smitten with Li'l Abner. The whole crew and supporting cast revolved around Sadie Hawkins Day, when unmarried women got to hitch up with any man they could catch and drag back by sundown. They would be married by, naturally, Marryin' Sam, whose 8-dollar weddin' featured him stripped to the waist and rasslin the four biggest guests, tellin' "four snappy jokes guaranteed t' embarrass man or beast - an'- then after ah dances a jig wif a pig, Ah yanks out two o' mah teeth, an' presents 'em to th' bride an' groom - as mementos o' th' occasion!!" 'nuf bout them. As you might guess, I love Al Capp's mythical mountain town and folk. And if you want to know more, I'm also including a copy of the book, The World of Li'l Abner, complete with the introduction by John Steinbeck and a forward by Charles Chaplin. It's the second printing from February, 1953. I just replaced it with the First Printing, so you got lucky. The rest of the book is full of Li'l Abner comics, including some Fearless Fosdick (the Dick Tracy ripoff detective).
