Wedgwood's Florentine-Blue is a fascinating pattern featuring wide cobalt blue bands intricately decorated with delicate scrollwork and detailed figures of griffins. The use of griffins by Wedgwood in Florentine-Blue is rooted in history. Griffins are mythological creatures most often depicted with the heads of lions and the wings of eagles. Since the 15th century, griffins have been especially prominent in the English tradition of "heraldry." Heraldry is the craft associated with producing a family's coat-of-arms. The griffin was commonly used in coats-of-arms as a symbol of pride, masculinity, and strength. This of course made the griffin an immediate favorite with kings, nobles, and state heroes throughout Europe.
