Description: An antique and really unique covered majolica sardine box with attached under plate from Minton, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, England, c.1885. White tin glazed earthenware; hand painted & artist signed. The cover has 3 raised fish, hand painted in shades of green & red, lying on a bed of gilt eel grass; raised & gilt eel grass is around the perimeter of the under plate. The box, lid and under plate all have a sponged gilt perimeter. See photos Please Note: I reserve the right to end this listing at any time due to lack of interest. Dimensions: 4" tall including lid; 8 3/4" long x 7 1/2" wide Markings: On the bottom of the under plate: impressed: "MINTON" "BB" (could be "RR" - see photos) impressed: three diamonds (date code for 1885) hand painted in gold, "PHS" "1892." Condition: Excellent for its age. No breaks or chips, and while it does have some age related problems, none of them are major. It's covered with a very, very fine crazing, which really adds to its charm. T is some associated light discoloration, mainly around the base of the box (inside and out) - see photos. T are 3 very fine & light glaze cracks (they don't go through to the other side): one on each end of the box and one on the underside of the lid (which you can't see on the outside). T's also some gilt loss, mainly on one side of the box & under plate, which you can see in the photos. Additional Info: A photo of this same box/cover/underplate in the bright colors you usually see majolica in is shown on pg. 46 of "The Collector's Encyclopedia of Majolica" by Mariann Katz-Marks.
