Original Ginko (1874 - 1897) Japanese Woodblock A Mirror of Famous Women in Old and Modern Times The Artist; Ginko was born in Tokyo around the middle of the 19th century, his real name was Adachi Heishichi. He was one of the noted Meiji era artists adopting the wood block print as his favored artistic medium and reinterpreting it for the "modern" Japanese art world. He worked as both a war correspondent and illustrator during the Sino-Japanese war. His woodblock print career lasted about 20 years and during that period he produced both war prints and some more generally interesting series of Japanese characters from legend and illustrations of stories. Utilizing many of the standards of Edo era wood block printing, and adding elements now available during the Meiji era, Ginko, along with his fellow Meiji era artists created a design movement distinctly their own. Ginko's designs are reminiscent of Yoshitoshi's designs and it has been conjectured the Ginko studied for some time under the great master Yoshitoshi. His figural style and linework are distinctly Meiji and similar to Yoshitoshi's works. With the newly available imported colors, like his Meiji contemporaries, Ginko's designs have a new brightness and vibrancy now respected as an innovative direction in wood block print making during the Meiji era. The series; Ginko's most well known series is Kokin meifu kagami "A Mirror of Famous Women in Old and Modern Times". This beautiful series recognizes and celebrates some of the great Japanese heroines from ancient tales, as well as current events during the Meiji era. Stories of lovely Japanese beauties captivating powerful men, women morning the loss of their samurai husbands, taking up arms and disguising themselves to fight alongside men, awaiting the return of absent young lovers . . . the beautiful illustrations captivate the imagination and bring these old stories to life. Each oban print was carefully designed and each print in the series has its own elements of charm and beauty. Without question, this is Ginko's finest work and one the most attractive print series of the Meiji era. This is a favorite series among collectors interested in these original old 19th century prints.
