Be SURE to check out our other auctions!!! This is a STAGGERING AND EXTREMELY RARE PIECE for any Arts and Crafts Mission connoisseur or collector, An Original and Genuine Antique English Victorian Arts and Crafts Mission Compactum Armoire or Wardrobe, in Solid Fumed Quartersawn Oak, Designed by Leonard Wyburd & Retailed by Liberty of London, Dating to c.1890..! It is a phenomenal item, see 6 pics above and fully 28 below. Of fumed quartersawn oak, it was designed by Leonard Wyburd for Liberty, and was made about 1890. Wyburd established the Liberty Furnishing and Decoration Studio and he revolutionized the concept of furniture design. Wyburd is just as important to Liberty style as the better-known Archibald Knox. This fabulous armoire has the signature Liberty hand-wrought iron ring handles, and trademark iron strap hinges and bracket feet. From the top down, it features a corbelled flared & pedimented crown above two doors, each door fitted with a pair of active (not faux) Gothic iron strap hinges and superb matching wrought iron latches. The left-hand door is deeper, as the right-hand one is situated over two drawers below with their original iron ring handles. The deeper left-hand armoire door opens to reveal a hanging compartment w a rail can be fitted, should one wish to do that, or one can use the three fitted hooks, whilst the shorter right-hand door conceals three shelves. Below those doors and drawers is a full-width drop-front cupboard storage section. The drop-down door is also complete with its original hardware, comprising a pair of iron strap hinges and ring handle. Below that is a set-in shelf serving double-duty as an undertier stretcher joining the four bracket feet, each foot with simple and understated carved details. The back is of vertical wood planking, and the wardrobe has the normal marks of age and use one needs to expect. Its only apparent flaw is an absent sliver of molding on the left-hand side w the top section meets the base. This is a large and heavy piece - it measures fully 85 1/2" tall by 54" wide by 24" deep and weighs in the region of 150 lbs..! Thankfully, it breaks into two pieces for transportation, i.e. the top separates from the base dropfront unit. It appears to have been cut vertically at some time in the dim, distant past alongside the central soffit, presumably for it to make its way through a restricted entry, but that cutting was carefully done and is not apparent except on close inspection. You will appreciate that, given this piece's size and weight, we are unable to ship it, though we can supply a shipping quote from a company known to us, and all we will need to do that is your state and zipcode. The shipping arrangements will be between the buyer and shipper, although we will do all we can to accommodate either party, and the buyer will pay the shipper directly. We are also happy to store this piece, should the buyer wish us to do that with a view to later collection.
