Brothers, John and William Mitchell, sons of Archibald Mitchell, started Mitchell Bros. Distillery, the 1st distillery of Scotland in 1828. This pottery jug is from the Mitchell Bros. Distillery. This jug is 7" in height, with an under glaze transfer of printed words "The Greybeard" on the shoulder and "Heather Dew Scotch Whiskey, Mitchell Bros. LTD. Distillers, Glasgow on the front. The picture shows a pair of kilted Scotsmen with raised glasses. The bottom is stamped Made in Scotland, with imprinted number 34, Buchman 1 Portobello Edinburgh. Under the handle is printed: CAUTION OUR WHISKY when in jars and bottles is protected by branded cork and patent capsules without which none is genuine. Any one re-filling our packages for trade purposes will be prosecuted. The stopper is missing, but partial cork is still in spout. No nicks, chips or cracks. It is in excellent condition. Sorry, no Scotch whisky is left inside.
